En mi oficio u hosco arte
ejercido en la noche en calma
cuando sólo rabia la luna
y los amantes descansan
con sus penas en los brazos,
trabajo a la luz cantora
no por ambición ni pan
lucimiento o simpatías
en los escenarios de marfil
destino por el común salario
de su recóndito corazón.
 
No para los soberbios aparte
de la rabiosa luna escribo
en estas páginas rociadas
por las espumas del mar
ni para los encumbrados muertos
y sus ruiseñores y salmos
sino para los amantes, sus brazos
abarcando las penas de los siglos,
que no elogian ni pagan ni
hacen caso de mi oficio o arte.

In my craft or sullen art
Exercised in the still night
When only the moon rages
And the lovers lie abed
With all their griefs in their arms,
I labour by singing light
Not for ambition or bread
Or the strut and trade of charms
On the ivory stages
But for the common wages
Of their most sacred heart.
 
Not for the proud man apart
From the raging moon I write
On these spindrift pages
Nor for the towering dead
With their nightingales and psalms
But for the lovers, their arms
Round the griefs of the ages,
Who pay no praise or wages
Nor heed my craft or art.
